The Wimp Is Worth the Wait!

29 Jul

It’s finally here!  The long awaited cover of the fifth Diary of a Wimpy Kid book was released today!  Everyone in Book Clubs has been counting down the days to reveal of the cover – and The Ugly Truth is out!

The diaries (or “journals” as Greg Heffley would call them) are funny, filled with hilarious illustrations and have been a HUGE hit with reluctant readers.  However, author Jeff Kinney didn’t start out in the book market.  Instead, in 2004, Kinney began the Wimpy Kid series with mini blog-like entries for kids.  To date, the online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has more than 80 million visits and is typically read by more than 70,000 kids a day!

The book series launched in April 2007 with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: A Novel in Cartoons and quickly became a New York Times bestseller, eventually reaching the #1 spot.  The second book, Rodrick Rules, released February 2008; the third book, The Last Straw, released January 2009; and the latest book in the series, Dog Days, released last October 2009.  More than 32 million Wimpy Kid books are in print in the U.S., and the books have been sold in more than 30 countries.  The series has been on the New York Times bestsellers list three times and also received the Nickelodeon Kids Choice “Favorite Book” the past three years.

The fifth book in hilarious series is scheduled to release this November 9th.  Until then, we only know a few details about the book.  Wimpykid.com teases that “Book 5 is about Greg and Rowley… will they stay friends?”  Jeff Kinney quotes in a Publishers Weekly post ,“I feel like everything in the series has been leading up to the fifth book, which is about change and the different ways Greg and his best friend, Rowley, deal with it.”

We here at Book Clubs LOVE the series and are very excited to announce that the paperback version of The Ugly Truth will be available this fall for only $7!  Plus, you can receive a set of exclusive Wimpy Kid stickers when you pre-order before November 1!

So, what do you think: Will Greg and Rowley stay friends?

My kids (8,9,10yrs) love Greg and Rowley. They all read the books last summer and had a kids book club discussion at their “End Summer Party”…it was so neat! We will definitely be pre ordering book #5! I have a feeling that there’s gonna be a “Day after Thanksgiving” book-club discussion planned:)
Thank you Jeff and Scholastic for the making it easy to “Fall in Love with Reading”.

Great! Do you know if this will be available in the Scholastic book fairs this winter/spring? I run the fairs at our school, and we have one in February. Thanks!

Love the color purple for the new book! I had about 8 of my 2nd graders last school year read the other 4 Wimpy Kid books and they loved it. Yes, I will be getting this book to add to my collection as well. Thanks for helping to get kids reading!
