Catastrophic Science

2 Nov

One of the best things about science class is when you get to do the fun experiments. You know which ones we’re talking about—the ones where things may get a little messy. That’s why when we saw The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science: 50 Experiments for Daring Young Scientists, we knew we had to offer it in our Book Clubs because what student, or anyone interested in science for that matter, wouldn’t want to try out the awesome experiments inside? What’s really great about this book is that it goes into the history and science behind each experiment so you can really learn how and why each experiment is important. From making your own X-ray machine to making a soda bottle rocket based on Robert Goddard’s experiment, there is something that is awesome and daring for all young budding scientists.

In fact, we were so excited about this book that we had to try an experiment out for ourselves. Check out Experiment #34: Robert Goddard’s Soda Bottle Rocket.

Want some more catastrophic science? You can find this HUGE PAPERBACK in November’s TAB.

Seven Half-Bloods Shall Answer the Call…

12 Oct

Last month, we mentioned how excited we were about the imminent release of the first book in Rick Riordan’s latest series. Well, now it’s finally here! The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost Hero hits bookstores and Scholastic Book Clubs book boxes. We’ve already read the first two chapters of The Lost Hero, and we can’t wait to get our hands on a freshly printed copy to find out what happens to Piper, Jason, Leo, and the rest of the newly discovered Half-Bloods.

To refresh your memory, what we know so far is that a new generation of demigods from Camp Half-Blood will be called upon to take up a quest:

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

What will happen and who they’ll meet along the way is anybody’s guess—will these heroes quarrel with the gods like Percy did? Will they find out who their godly parents are? WILL PERCY APPEAR IN THIS SERIES? What about the prophecy and the new Oracle, Percy’s friend Rachel Elizabeth?! So many questions left unanswered. I’m looking forward to meeting these new characters, but I’m really hoping that this first book will include some familiar faces from the first New York Times best-selling series!

If you pre-ordered The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost Hero from Scholastic Book Clubs, you should be receiving it soon! If not, you can still purchase it from the Arrow or TAB October or November catalogs.  Visit our Rick Riordan Fan Page to learn more.

The Real Deal: Editors David and Abby Preview Fall Titles

9 Aug

It’s back-to-school season, all right.  The squeak-squeak songs of new sneakers in the crowded hallways, the tap-tap dance of new lunchboxes on young knees, and the grind-grind of sharpened pencils wafts from the classrooms-school’s back (or will be soon!), and we’re looking forward to sharing in the enthusiasm of a new year.

We’re bursting at the seams here at Book Clubs, especially our editors, who think that this is the BEST year yet for children’s books in Clubs.  But with so many options, we know it can be hard to find the books that are just right for your child (or student). Will they be age appropriate?  Will they hold your child’s interest? Will they be the right reading level?  And this is where we love to help.  Our editors have worked tirelessly to hand-select the best new books of the year that will not only keep them interested, but will boost their reading levels and success in school.

Make sure you check out this video featuring two of our resident experts/all-stars/children’s book gurus, Editors David and Abby, to learn a little more about some of their favorite September titles.  In David’s words, “We’ve spared no effort to provide you with the very, very finest books that can be found on planet Earth in  Scholastic Book Clubs.”

Do you agree? Open up your Book Clubs September flyers (in print or online) and just bask in the wonder, the joy, and the genius of children’s books.  We have found an awesome selection of just-right books for kids across America, and we hope you think so too!

Do you all remember the joy in Charlie’s face when he found the Golden Ticket?  Well, that’s how I feel today, because Scholastic Book Clubs is officially open again. The early-bird teachers will start shopping online, and they will activate online ordering for their classrooms. Parents and kids will haggle over which books they will purchase.  The first boxes will soon be shipped to classrooms nationwide.  And kids across America get to be a part of the book box experience all over again.
