Welcome, all, to another edition of BTF. There were so many great book trailers that I looked at this week that I couldn’t decide. That is, until I started reading The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future by Dav Pilkey and was curious if there was a book trailer for it. And wouldn’t you know it—not only is there a book trailer, but an awesome one at that! For those who don’t know, Dav Pilkey is the acclaimed author of the Captain Underpants series and Ook and Gluk is his new book, which can be found on September’s Lucky and Arrow clubs.
If you need more Ook and Gluk, check out what the Lucky Editors had to say about it here.
It’s September, and it’s back-to-school time for almost everyone. We have been discussing back to school quite a bit on Book Talk with “Authors Go Back to School!” and chatting about our favorite memories of Scholastic Book Clubs when we were in school. Now we are adding one more to the list…Top 5 Favorite Schools from Children’s Literature! Here are the coolest/best schools or camps from some of our favorite books in no particular order:
Hogwarts (Harry Potter)
Camp Half-Blood (Percy Jackson & the Olympians)
Gallagher Academy (Gallagher Girls)
Cat School (Splat the Cat)
What are some of your favorite schools from children’s books?
September has so many great books that our editors are excited about, we just had to share our own reviews. Here is one for The Kind of Friends We Used to Be by Frances O’Roark Dowell which can be found on September’s Arrow. Our very own Arrow editor, Ann Marie, had this to say:
“No one said middle school was easy…. and it’s even harder without a best friend to share it with. As Marilyn and Kate begin a new school year, they’re learning way more than what’s happening in the classroom. Marilyn is dealing with her parents’ divorce and Kate can’t help but crush on the cute guy from her creative writing class. Marilyn is finding her inner cheerleader, while Kate is discovering her flare for music. Can these two former BFF’s find a common ground, or have they drifted too far apart? Told in alternating voices, Frances O’Roark Dowell has created a relatable story infused with honesty, humor and heart.”
If you like The Kind of Friends We Used to Be, here are 5 other great reads about friendship on September’s Arrow:
1. The Secret Language of Girls
2. When You Reach Me
3. Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z.
5. Popularity Papers
September is an exciting time, not only is it back-to-school for teachers, parents, and students but it is also when we here at Scholastic Book Clubs get to introduce new and exciting characters and books for the new school year! This September is definitely not lacking in new characters and exciting books. One such book is the new hilarious romp from Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future. Our Lucky editors, Shelly and Caitlin, are so excited about this new title in September’s Lucky that they had to tell you about it. Click here for Shelly’s review. Shelly Tells us All about Ook and Gluk!
Book Talk: Shelly, how would you describe The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future?
Shelly: EPIC! LEGENDARY! HISTORIC! Make that, PREHISTORIC!
Book Talk: Wow! Can you tell us a little about the book?
Shelly: Sure! Travel back in time to 500,001 BC and meet Ook and Gluk, wild and adventurous kung-fu cavemen from Caveland, Ohio! Life is great for these two best friends: Swinging on vines; hanging with their dinosaur pal, Lily; and outsmarting their nasty leader, Big Chief Goppernopper. Everything seems fine until an evil corporation from the future invades their town and pulls Ook and Gluk through a time portal to the year 2222 AD. Will their brains and talents in Kung Fu be enough to save Ook and Gluk and bring them home safely? With help from Dav Pilkey, George Beard and Harold Hutchins (the creators of Captain Underpants) bring you The Adventures of Ook and Gluk Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future, packed with more of the laffs, fun, and flip-o-rama action that you’ve come to enjoy from the Captain Underpants series.
